Hives is a condition in which itchy rashes appear on the surface of the skin. It is also called welts or nettle rash. Medically, this condition is called urticaria. The rash could be very itchy and is considered to be communicable. The symptoms of hives are considered very irritating and there are different ways to treat hives. Usually, the rash goes away within a few days. We highly recommend that you consult your doctor rather than attempting to treat yourself. 

What is hives? 

  • An itchy rash that is raised and suddenly appears on the surface of the skin is called hives. There are different types of hives but most of them have the same effects. 
  • Acute urticaria usually goes away in less than 6 weeks. It is caused because of an allergic reaction to some medication or food. Some insect bites can also cause this rash. 
  • Chronic urticaria usually takes more than 6 weeks to go away. It could be because of thyroid disease, hepatitis or cancer. It is more severe than acute urticaria and it can also spread to other areas of the body.
  • Physical urticaria is caused by over exposure to the sun, staying in extreme hot or cold climates or rubbing of the skin during exercise. 

Home remedies for treating hives

  • A cold compress provides relief and reduces inflammation and itchiness. A cool and damp cloth can be applied to the affected area. 
  • Taking a bath with an anti-itch solution and baking soda baths can reduce irritation. 
  • An oatmeal bath will also help to soothe the skin.
  • Apply aloe vera in the hives. It may soothe the skin but you should do a skin test before applying to the affected area. 
  • Do not use perfumes, moisturizers, and fragrance-based soaps which are irritants and may worsen the situation.
  • Wear loose and comfortable cotton clothes.
